Bon Secours saves $125 million using Premier labor productivity tool
The Bon Secours Health System, Inc. is headquartered in Marriottsville, Maryland. The $2.6 billion not-for-profit Catholic health system owns, manages, or joint ventures 13 acute-care hospitals, one psychiatric hospital, five nursing care facilities, five assisted living facilities, and 15 home care and hospice programs. The system has more than 20,000 employees who help people in seven states primarily on the East Coast.
Situation:
The Bon Secours Health System Inc. (BSHS) in 2002 realized that to achieve its strategic goals of improving the health of communities it serves, the system needed to implement a comprehensive labor management program.
Solution:
BSHSI selected Premier’s OperationsAdvisor™ for productivity monitoring, comparative data and benchmarks and engaged with Premier’s Performance Partners™ program to place on-site management engineers in several locations throughout the system. Performance Partners initially helped implement the program and develop standardized reporting and later became labor management coaches.
Result:
- Since 2002, the health system has seen more than $125 million in labor savings.
- Workforce reduced by approximately 700 FTEs and paid hours expense per case mix adjusted for discharge significantly decreased as well.
"In our operation, labor is 60 percent of our expense so we have to
monitor it very closely. OperationsAdvisor allows us to do that in a very timely
manner."
