Premier tool helps Iowa IDN automate value analysis process

Genesis Health System includes four hospitals and dozens of other sites serving a 10-county region in Iowa and Illinois. The system offers a full continuum of care including preventive and primary; acute and tertiary care; home health and hospice; nursing home care; and rehabilitation and long-term care. Affiliates include Genesis Medical Center, Davenport; Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus; Genesis Medical Center, DeWitt; Genesis Medical Education Foundation; Visiting Nurse Association; GenVentures Inc.; Genesis Health Group and Psychology Associates and Genesis Behavioral Resources. There are more than 665 licensed beds, 600 physicians, 5,000 staff members and hundreds of volunteers.

Situation:

The purchasing manager for Genesis Health System was overseeing the value analysis process for four hospitals and dozens of other sites. As one of the 100 most wired healthcare systems in the United States with an overall goal of using electronic formats as much as possible, Genesis was searching for a way to automate as much of the value analysis process as possible.

Solution:

Premier’s ValueAdvisorTM tool was selected to track the value analysis process from identification through analysis and from decision-making through implementation, including return on investment on both a clinical and financial basis.

Result:

The value analysis process is automated, removing paper requests from the process just three months after program installation.
There is more time for work instead of time-consuming documentation, enough that a clinical support committee was resurrected.
New committees including a steering committee of top administrators were added.
All employees and physicians can make applications and see what products have been requested.
Physicians can enter a conflict of interest or make a potential disclosure if appropriate which is helpful for the legal team.
