Premier environment scorecard gives baseline view for Saint Francis Care
Saint Francis Care is an integrated healthcare delivery system established by Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Affiliated with the University of Connecticut Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine, it has 617 inpatient beds and 65 bassinets and is one of the largest hospitals in Connecticut and the largest Catholic hospital in New England. A regional referral center, Saint Francis has major clinical concentrations in cardiology, oncology, women’s services, orthopedics and rehabilitation. Programs in diabetes and traumatic brain injury are regarded as national models.
Situation:
Saint Francis Care had successfully implemented a number of programs aimed at improving environmental health, had recently formed a green committee, and was looking for a good benchmark tool.
Solution:
Saint Francis found out about Premier’s “Executive Scorecard on the Environment” – a short assessment tool for CEOs to rate their organization’s pollution prevention, material purchasing, and waste management/reduction programs. The results can help hospitals prioritize their goals while providing valuable information to their governing board, sponsors and communities.
Result:
After using the scorecard to assess all environmental projects – from those not yet implemented to those fully implemented – Saint Francis moved up two complete rating levels just a year after beginning the process. The organization scored 185 out of 200 points, giving it the highest rating of excellent. The scorecard also helped the hospital complete its application for the H2E Environmental Awards program because it helped provide a strong snapshot of all the facility’s environmental initiatives.
"We’re never satisfied with where we are and our constant focus is on
improving our efficiencies. The scorecard came at a good time because we had
just launched a major hospital renovation project and it raised a lot of
important issues for us such as how best to manage new waste streams. It really
motivated and challenged us to improve even more than we already had."
